Educational and Environmental Tours
Andros Island is promoted by the Bahamas Ministry of Tourism and the Government of the Bahamas as the Eco-tourism capital of the Bahamas. Andros Island is the largest of the Islands of the Bahamas and the fifth largest island in the Caribbean. There is a growing network of nature preserves in the Bahamas and in Andros Island. South Andros Island offers a lifetime opportunity for tourists, students and teachers to learn about this pristine unique natural environment.
In 1995, The Nature Conservancy completed an assessment of the Great Caribbean Basin’s biological diversity and identified Andros Island as a regionally important conservation priority both for its freshwater resources and the dry broadleaf evergreen forests found in the central and southern part of the island. Protecting these forests will also help protect a number of threatened bird species, as well as the Andros Rock Iguana and the Black Crab, all of which rely on these forests for food and habitat.
The Andros Beach Club has a strong commitment to the health and well being of the island and its children and families. To that end, there is a long standing relationship with the local schools to enhance the daily curriculum with experts unavailable on the island. In order to encourage this kind of “alternative” destination travel, we make lodging discounts available to those with qualified credentials who wish to volunteer in the schools. This has been approved by the local education authorities.
We encourage high school and college groups who wish to offer travel abroad opportunities. In March 2008, the first college group from Burlington College of Vermont spent their spring break receiving 3 credits, exploring the flora, fauna, marine life and culture of the island. Accompanied by an expert in the field with years of experience in Andros Island, these students enjoyed and benefited from this unique academic opportunity. Click here to read the student blog.
